Romeo and Juliet

Hello world I hope you’re having a lovely day! As it’s a new month of course it’s a new theme where I will tell you each week (ish: balancing this small community of people and the rest of my life is far more challenging than I thought) about a film I want to share with you guys. As it’s February and we celebrate Valentines Day this month, I wanted to theme my blog posts on the theme Love. So to kick this month off I thought: what film stands out when I say love? I think its just me but I instantly thought Romeo and Juliet. (Rating: 12)

 

I’ve decided to talk about the 1996 (USA) version – I believe the film came out in the UK in 1997 but I really enjoyed this film because they modernised the Shakespeare tragedy – I bet a sucker for Shakespeare will absolutely hate me for saying it but I loved it! In this day and age, it is extremely difficult to understand his work and I don’t know about you but I’m one of those people and watching the film helped a lot with my understanding of the play and everything kind of was laid out in front of me where I really understood it; of course the film doesn’t show the exact pollen however fairly close. But yes, I think the film is helpful to us people who find it a challenge to understand Shakespeare like others can, it’s also very enjoyable, it keeps you well hooked and its original which I think is always good.

 

So for those people who have no clue about this film/play it’s about two families (Montague and Capulet) who despise each other and a boy called Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet who meet and fall in love with each other and the stories about their love and the complications that come with it and how they keep their love a secret as they shouldn’t be socialising with each other.

I never have an issue with casting but just for reference of course Leonardo DiCaprio stars in this and he plays Romeo. Leo has featured in The Wolf of Wall Street and Titanic, Claire Danes plays Juliet, she is in Homeland, John Leguizamo who is Tybalt, Harold Perrineau who is Mercutio and I think they are the main characters and for the f.r.i.e.n.d.s lovers out there like myself, I believe Ross and Monica’s mother is in this so do look out for her if you see her.

I couldn’t find the trailer so I’m sorry about that but the director of the film is Baz Luhrmann and I actually really like what he’s made, I really enjoyed Romeo + Juliet but he also directed The Great Gatsby which I loved it was insane! But I personally really like Baz’s work because they’re just so enjoyable and he’s great with party scenes (the one in Romeo and Juliet was just as good as The Great Gatsby.

La La Land

Hello world, I am sorry it has been a while since I last wrote a blog post of film: I have been so ill for the past two weeks, I haven’t had a chance to write about anything and I have been resting and just doing work but I am back now and ready to continue writing about the films I love. Still sticking to the month of current favourite’s I’ve decided to talk about a film I watched yesterday with my friend and absolutely loved and that is La La Land. Age Rating: PG – 12A.

The film was released on the 12th January in England and December 9th in the United States and there are so many positive reviews some saying it’s ‘Casablanca for the new generation’ or others ‘La La Land breathes new life into a bygone genre with thrilling assured direction, powerful performances and an irresistible excess of heart’ and I totally agree with the people who absolutely love it because it’s so good.

The story begins with Mia practicing her lines for an audition in her car with traffic ahead of her on a motorway. When looking at her script the traffic clears in front of her and people start honking their horns and she looks in her central mirror (I’m guessing that’s what it’s called) and sees a guy looking at her in disapproval and swerves around her – the audience or Mia do not know he’s called but to save the trouble he’s called Sebastian. She then meets him again at a summer party where he is the Keyboardist in a band and they start to get to know each other. They both fall in love by their love for music. Mia is an actress and Sebastian is a musician. The whole story shows their love pursuing their dream and the complications that come with it.

Because la la land is not based on a book, I do not really have an issue with the casting. Emma Stone, who has starred in The Help and also The Amazing Spider-Man’ is Mia and Ryan Gosling plays the role of Sebastian and he’s in The Notebook. This  isn’t the first time they are featuring in a film together for the third time. The first encounter in Crazy, Stupid, Love and the second in Gangster Squad – I think people really love the two of them working together. John Legend plays the role of Keith and I feel like those three are the most main characters you should know about.

The director of the film was Damien Chazelle and I personally have never seen any of the films he has directed but I am really keen to watch more of his work as this film was incredible. I might watch Whiplash as the reviews I have read on La La Land have mentioned Whiplash and then I realised Miles Teller is in it and he’s great so, if I do end up watching it I will let you know: sorry I have rambled but yeah Damien seems to have directed some great films and I should have watched more of his films sooner. Anyways rumours have been floating round saying he thought of the idea of La La Land in 2010 and couldn’t find a company willing to film his idea until Whiplash came out and then he finally did. It is believed that the films budget was $30 million and it made a huge amount of $130 million so it really was a success.

 

The film won 7 Golden Globe Awards including best actor went to Ryan Gosling and to fit perfectly best actress went to Emma Stone, the best director was Damien Chazelle who of course directed the film and the film won best picture of the year (musical or comedy). So the film was a great success when it came to awards and award season is coming up so I am sure more awards should be given to this film when they come around.

I have seen people saying the ending wasn’t what they hoped but I personally at first didn’t like it but coming to think of it I’m glad it wasn’t cliché and it was unpredicted so I liked it – however sad it may be.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Well hello there, I hope you have all had a very lovely start to the new year and are having a great day. I was thinking each month should have a theme in I should base my blog posts on. For the month January, I thought it would be fun to talk about my film favourite’s of all time (The Month of Current Favourites) from any year. Today, I am going to talk about a film I really like which is The Perks of being a Wallflower. Age Rating: 12

Charlie is portrayed by Logan Lerman who has also featured as the protagonist in the Percy Jackson films as well as this film. Ezra Miller plays the role of Patrick who recently has starred as Credence in Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them. Well known actress Emma Watson stars as Sam and features in Harry Potter as Hermione Granger. Mae Whitman as Mary Elizabeth, Erin Wilhelm as Alice, Melanie Lynksey as Aunt Helen and Nina Dobrev as Candace.

The Perks of being a Wallflower is a coming of age film (based on the novel written by Stephen Chbosky) about a boy, Charlie who is found upon to be an outsider, he’s not on the scale of popular to nerdy… he isn’t part of that type of society. This is because of trauma he faces in his past – which I personally believe is a spoiler if I tell you. However, majority of Charlie’s life he keeps to himself and cannot fit in, which explains why he sits alone at lunch and is very shy (the trailer illustrates this). He finds friends, Sam, Patrick, Mary Elizabeth and Alice who accept him and show him another side of life he has never seen before. He discovers the highs and hardships of friendship and learns how to combat it.

 

The trailer I believe sums up the storyline however with Sam, I think that trailer gives away a bit too much information of her past which ruins the surprise and storyline in the slightest. I think they definitely gave away the right amount of information with Charlie as you see him wound in an abundance of motions which leaves viewers questioning why is Charlie feeling this way, why is he making a snow angel, why is he really scared and why is he crying? They definitely dropped subtle hints for patrick and I like how in the trailer a section from one of the letters in the book is used.

Stephen Chbosky the author of the novel, is also the director of the film. In my opinion, I believe this is interesting because the person who created the novel and created people’s thoughts and actions I believe has a real sense on how it should look in reality or on the screens. The author behind the book in my opinion really knows what to include and what to not include and they get the most significant parts and know what isn’t as necessary.

 

 

So I really love this film because it’s really eye-opening and gripping and there are so many themes and different storylines/issues in the film which kind of bring them closer and sometimes ruin their friendship. What I mean by this is that the three main characters (Sam, Patrick and Charlie) all have a difficult past and present and some problems they face are between each other (if you are a reader and have already watched the film, I think you will know what I mean). I love the comedy aspect to it as well and if I had to choose a character it would definitely be Patrick for sure because he is so funny. It is a 12 so I mean it’s not completely sad and depressing however a box of tissues beside you would definitely be ideal.

A beginning

Dear World,
Hello and welcome to this tiny corner of the internet where I talk about something I really enjoy… films. I don’t know about you but there is something about films which I love: I feel like a film is something you watch to enjoy or it can be like a visual textbook – It can teach you about an event in the past. It can show how someone suffering with an illness is feeling and their thoughts. A film can show everyone’s thoughts in a storyline. I love how 2 or 3 hours of your time can completely change you. In those well – spent hours, it can make you laugh, bring tears to your eyes, it can make you scared, it can make you really sad but it is something which has a massive impact on you and not many people realise it. I love how films aren’t restricting: there are films suitable for young children and for older people. There are so many genres for people to explore and that is what makes me a lover of film, there’s something there for everyone – you just have to look through the infinite films available and use trial and error.

And that is why I thought it would be great to start a blog for film – to show my love for film with people that also love film. I thought for 2017 starting a blog would be great to fill my leisure time. I don’t know how on earth you stumbled on my blog but please meander through my blog/website thing and I would really appreciate it if you gave some feedback.

Also, the design of website is still a work in progress: fairly soon it will have a film vibe to it instead of looking plain – there’s nothing wrong with plain, I like a space full without it looking like a clutter.
